Ponder this for a moment…During the American war of independence from our friends across the pond, George Washington and his troops benefited from a bit of miscommunication. According to history books, during the Battle of Trenton in 1776, the enemy commander Johann Rall was said to be an arrogant and lazy leader. According to legend, an American spy passed along a note to Rall, which pinpointed the location of Washington’s forces. Rall, however, was not well versed in English as he was a German hired by the British. Instead of asking someone to translate the note, which would have surely given him the upper hand, the commander opted to put the information into his pocket to his own peril. As a result, the enemy army was defeated handily by Washington and his troops at Trenton. The rest, as they say, is history.
When Rall’s body was found on the field of battle, his pockets were searched and the note found. In this case, a lack of translation was deadly. Hopefully, you don’t find yourself in the same situation of war, but miscommunication and a lack of translation can result in very serious consequences. Whether you simply receive the wrong order in a restaurant or you find yourself on the wrong operating table, proper communication and understanding is serious. Below are a few examples of where we at CORE Languages could help you avoid disaster.
Medical appointment and emergency
Whether you are in good health or bad health, visiting the doctor is a serious matter. In the ever-increasing diversity of our world, more and more people who speak different native languages are mingling and living closer and closer together. This presents a very real need for translation when it comes to the seriousness of our health. Interpreters inside hospitals and doctors offices could help to avoid a very serious (and possibly deadly) case of miscommunication.
As with the health of the human body, abiding by and navigating the laws of our country are not reserved for only native English speakers. The world is much smaller than it has ever been. Literally thousands of non-native speakers live in our communities. Miscommunication in legal matters has the potential to bring life-long disastrous results. Whether you’re working through depositions, workers-comp proceedings or court trials, clear communication and understanding is essential.
ITRON, Michelin, and Bosch, just to name a few, are examples of the growing number of international companies doing business locally. An essential component of these businesses is the presence of foreign employees that are not native and/or fluent speakers of English. In addition, these types of companies are in constant communication with their offices in different countries. This presents a great opportunity for miscommunication between languages. Misunderstanding is a common problem, but it doesn’t have to be.
The hearing impaired members of our communities are often an overlooked example of communication errors. Communication doesn’t have to be verbal to be considered communication, and the population of deaf persons, whether functionally or completely impaired, is much larger than we may think. Proper, understandable, and complete communication is essential.
At CORE Languages, our mission is to serve you by ensuring that there is no barrier to good communication between you and your clients. What important information can we help you communicate?
