CORE Languages offers bite size courses lasting about 10 weeks each. We split A1.1 into two courses to offer flexibility for your scheduling and the option to review specific topics without repeating a much longer course.
  • Level 1-1 is a course designed for the true beginner, someone who has had no previous experience with the Spanish language. It covers basic vocabulary, the differences between ser and estar, and verbs in the present tense. The activities in this level focus on helping each student to speak Spanish, using a controlled and limited vocabulary.
  • Level 1-2 continues to focus on the present tense and teaches students how to use irregular verbs, prepositions, demonstratives and specialized vocabulary.

After completing these levels, you’ll be able to:

  • understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.

  • introduce yourself and others and ask and answer questions about personal details such as where they live, people they know and things they have.

  • interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

Spanish Commands with Pronouns

Reflexive, indirect object, and direct object pronouns must be attached to the end of an affirmative command. Remember the acronym RID because, if more than one of these pronouns are used together, they will consistently be used in that order.

Spanish Informal Commands

commands are the singular form of informal commands. You can use affirmative  commands to tell a friend, family member the same age as you or younger, classmate, child, or pet to do something. To tell somebody not to do something, you would use a negative tú command.

The Introduction
Spanish Answering Questions

The most basic Spanish questions are those whose answer is “Si” or “No”. In English we ask questions using auxiliaries like DO or DID, but in Spanish you just need to say the same sentence without any auxiliary changing its basic structure.

Spanish Preterit vs Imperfect

Many students have trouble knowing when to use the preterit tense or the imperfect tense, as they both refer to actions in the past. There are several general rules you can follow to know when to use one tense or another.

Spanish Irregular Imperfect Tense

There are only three verbs with irregular conjugations in the imperfect: irser, and ver.

Spanish Imperfect Tense

There are only two sets of endings for regular imperfect verbs in Spanish, one for -ar verbs and one for both -er and -ir verbs. To conjugate a regular verb in the imperfect tense in Spanish, simply remove the infinitive ending ( -ar, -er, or -ir) and add the imperfect ending that matches the subject.

The Spanish preterit tense is used to describe actions completed at a specific point in the past; whereas the imperfect is used to describe habitual or continuous actions in the past with no specific beginning or end.  Some verbs require small changes when being conjugated in this tense.
