Prepositions of location in the dative case answer the question “Wo?” (Where?) or “Woher?” (Where from?) in German. The prepositions “an…vorbei” (past), “bis zu” (until/to/up to), and “gegenüber (von)” (across (from)) are typically used when giving directions.
The prepositions that answer the question “Woher?” are used to indicate a place one is coming “from” or “out of” (see table below).
