Here’s what Clara shared with us about her passion for teaching Spanish and advice for foreign language students:
I have been teaching Spanish for about 9 years to all ages, including preschool and adult. I first became interested in languages when I was a young teenager and felt the need to communicate with the growing Hispanic population in my city. While studying in Spain during college I discovered I had a talent for teaching when I began giving English lessons to my professor’s children. I noticed how many Spaniards and other Europeans placed a heavy focus on teaching their children two or three languages, so when I returned to the U.S. I decided to teach Spanish here.
I believe speaking multiple languages is the key to becoming successful in our growing global community and it also promotes cultural awareness. Through my studies and my work I have discovered many entertaining and educational aspects of other cultures. I thoroughly enjoy Spanish film; my favorite director is Pedro Almodóvar. I also like to read poetry by Alfonsina Storni and Pablo Neruda.
I advise any language learner to explore the culture of the language they choose to study and to spend time immersed in the language when possible. Listen to the radio, watch television, and try to read signs and advertisements. Travel is also an inspiring way to develop and sharpen language skills, so get out there and practice!
