How können conjugates

The present singular uses kann: ich kann, du kannst, er kann, while the plural keeps the infinitive vowel: wir können, ihr könnt, sie können. The Präteritum drops the umlaut (konnte), and the Konjunktiv II adds it back (könnte), which is the usual way to make polite requests. With another verb, the Perfekt uses a double infinitive: Ich habe nicht kommen können. The participle gekonnt only appears when können stands alone: Das habe ich nicht gekonnt. Können has no imperative.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Adding zu before the infinitive: "Ich kann zu kommen" is wrong; say "Ich kann kommen".
  • Using gekonnt with another verb in the Perfekt. Say "Ich habe nicht kommen können", not "Ich habe nicht kommen gekonnt".
  • Writing "ich kanne" or "er kannt". The ich and er forms have no ending: ich kann, er kann.
