Dürfen conjugation German verb

Dürfen is the modal verb for permission ("may", "to be allowed to"). In the negative it means "must not": Hier darf man nicht rauchen. The singular present loses the umlaut (ich darf), and the Konjunktiv II dürfte expresses a likely guess ("probably").

How dürfen conjugates

Present: ich darf, du darfst, er darf, wir dürfen, ihr dürft, sie dürfen. The Präteritum has no umlaut: durfte, durftest, durfte, durften, durftet, durften. The Konjunktiv II puts it back: dürfte, used both for very polite requests (Dürfte ich kurz stören?) and for probability (Das dürfte kein Problem sein). With another verb, the Perfekt uses a double infinitive: Ich habe nicht mitkommen dürfen. Gedurft only appears when dürfen stands alone. There is no imperative.

Was darf es sein?
what can I get you? (in shops)
nicht dürfen
must not
Das dürfte stimmen.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using "nicht müssen" for "must not". Prohibition is "nicht dürfen": "Du darfst das nicht sagen."
  • Adding an ending in the ich and er forms: "ich darfe" is wrong; it is ich darf, er darf.
