Wollen conjugation German verb
Wollen is the modal verb for wanting and intending ("want to"). It has its own vowel in the singular present (ich will, du willst, er will) and no ending in the ich and er forms. Because ich will sounds like English "I will", learners often misread it as a future.
- to want; to want to
- modal verb
- Partizip II: gewollt
- Auxiliary: haben
Wollen in the Präsens (present): will, willst, will, wollen, wollt, wollen.

How wollen conjugates
Present: ich will, du willst, er will, wir wollen, ihr wollt, sie wollen. The Präteritum is regular, wollte, and the Konjunktiv II looks the same (wollte), so for polite wishes Germans prefer möchte. With another verb, the Perfekt uses a double infinitive: Ich habe schon immer Japanisch lernen wollen. The participle gewollt appears when wollen stands alone: Das habe ich nicht gewollt. There is no imperative. Wollen can also take a direct object: Ich will einen Kaffee.
