Nehmen conjugation German verb

Nehmen means "to take" and is also what you say when choosing something in a shop or restaurant (Ich nehme die Suppe). It is a strong verb with several stem changes: nimmst, nimmt in the present, nahm in the past, genommen as the participle.

How nehmen conjugates

Present: ich nehme, du nimmst, er nimmt, wir nehmen, ihr nehmt, sie nehmen. Note that the h disappears and the m doubles in the du and er forms. The du imperative changes the same way: nimm! The Präteritum is nahm, the Konjunktiv II nähme and the participle genommen, with haben in the Perfekt. Many verbs are built on it, such as teilnehmen (take part), annehmen (accept) and übernehmen (take over), and they share the same forms.

etwas ernst nehmen: to take something seriously
Rücksicht nehmen auf: to be considerate of
sich Zeit nehmen: to take one's time
Ich nehme...: I'll have... (ordering)

Mistakes to avoid

Forgetting the stem change: "du nehmst" and "er nehmt" are wrong; use du nimmst, er nimmt, and the imperative nimm.
Using nehmen for "take" in time expressions. "It takes two hours" is "Es dauert zwei Stunden".
