How nennen conjugates

The present is regular: nenne, nennst, nennt, nennen, nennt, nennen. The Präteritum switches the vowel to a: nannte, nanntest, nannte, nannten, nanntet, nannten, and the participle is genannt, with haben in the Perfekt. The Konjunktiv II goes back to e: nennte, not nannte, although in practice people say "würde nennen". Nennen takes two accusatives: Sie nennen ihn den Boss. Sich nennen means "to call oneself".

Mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing up nennen and heißen. "Ich heiße Anna" (my name is), but "Man nennt mich Anni" (people call me).
  • Using the weak past "nennte" for the Präteritum. The past is nannte; nennte is only the Konjunktiv II.
