Obtenir conjugation French verb
Obtenir means to get or to obtain something you had to ask, apply or work for: a visa, a diploma, a loan, an appointment, a result. It is more formal than avoir or recevoir and very common in professional writing. Compound tenses use avoir: j'ai obtenu.

How obtenir conjugates
Obtenir conjugates like tenir and venir. The singular present uses obtien-: j'obtiens, tu obtiens, il obtient, and ils doubles the n: ils obtiennent. Nous and vous use obten-: nous obtenons, vous obtenez. The future and conditional have a d: j'obtiendrai. The subjunctive splits the same way (que j'obtienne, que nous obtenions). The past participle is obtenu, and the passé simple is j'obtins. Contenir, maintenir, retenir and soutenir follow the same model.

Mistakes to avoid
- Writing a single n in ils: it is ils obtiennent, with nn.
