How commencer conjugates
Commencer is a regular -er verb with one spelling rule: the c becomes ç before a or o so it keeps its soft s sound. That gives nous commençons, most of the imparfait (je commençais, ils commençaient), the gerund commençant and the passé simple (il commença). Before e or i the plain c stays: nous commencions, vous commencez, je commencerai. Learn nous commençons and je commençais first, since those are the forms people misspell most.
