être conjugation French verb

Être is the French verb for "to be" and one of the two auxiliaries used to build compound tenses. You use it for identity, descriptions, location and time (Je suis à Lyon, Il est huit heures), and it also forms the passé composé of verbs like aller, venir and partir, plus all reflexive verbs.

How être conjugates

Être is irregular in almost every tense, so learn it as a set. The present (je suis, tu es, il est, nous sommes, vous êtes, ils sont) has no regular pattern. The imparfait uses the stem ét- (j'étais), the future and conditional use ser- (je serai, je serais), and the subjunctive is sois, sois, soit, soyons, soyez, soient. Its own compound tenses take avoir: j'ai été, never je suis été. The past participle été never changes form.
