écrire conjugation French verb
Écrire means "to write" and is used for letters, emails, reports and books. You écrire à quelqu'un (write to someone) and écrire quelque chose. It takes avoir in compound tenses, and its participle écrit is also a noun (un écrit, par écrit = in writing).

How écrire conjugates
Écrire has a short singular (j'écris, tu écris, il écrit) and adds a v in the plural (nous écrivons, vous écrivez, ils écrivent). The v stem also appears in the imparfait (j'écrivais), the subjunctive (que j'écrive) and the passé simple (j'écrivis). The future keeps the infinitive (j'écrirai). The past participle is écrit (feminine écrite). Décrire and inscrire follow the same pattern.

Mistakes to avoid
- Forgetting the v in the plural: it is nous écrivons, not nous écrisons.
- Leaving out à before the person: j'ai écrit à ma sœur.
- Dropping the accent: the verb is always written with é (écrire, j'écris).
