In compound tenses it normally takes the auxiliary of the verb that follows: ho potuto lavorare, but sono potuto venire.

  • to be able to; can; may

  • Gerund: potendo
  • Auxiliary: avere

How potere conjugates

The present uses the stem poss- in most persons: posso, puoi, può, possiamo, potete, possono. The future and conditional drop the e: potrò, potrei. The subjunctive is possa. The passato remoto is regular (potei, poté), and there is no imperative. With verbs that take essere, careful speakers use essere (Non sono potuto venire), although ho potuto is common in speech. Learn posso, può, potrei and ho potuto first.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using potere for learned skills: "Sai nuotare?" (sapere) asks if you know how to swim; "Puoi nuotare?" asks if you are allowed or able right now.
  • Adding a preposition before the infinitive: "Posso venire," not "Posso di venire."
  • Translating past "could" with the conditional: "I couldn't come yesterday" is "Non sono potuto venire ieri," not "Non potrei venire."
