Essere conjugation Italian verb

Essere is the Italian verb for "to be," used for identity, origin, profession, descriptions and telling the time (Sono le tre). It is also an auxiliary: verbs of motion and change of state, reflexive verbs and essere itself form their compound tenses with it, so the past participle agrees with the subject (sono andata, siamo stati).

  • to be
  • irregular
  • Participle: stato
  • Gerund: essendo
  • Auxiliary: essere

Essere in the Presente (present): sono, sei, è, siamo, siete, sono.

How essere conjugates

Essere is irregular in almost every tense, so learn it form by form. The present (sono, sei, è, siamo, siete, sono) uses sono for both io and loro; the subject or context tells you which. The imperfect is ero, eri, era; the future stem is sar- (sarò); the passato remoto is fui, fosti, fu. Its own compound tenses use essere plus stato, which agrees: è stato, è stata, sono stati. Watch the accent on è (is) versus e (and). Start with the present, the imperfect and the passato prossimo.

Mistakes to avoid
