How stare conjugates

Stare is an irregular -are verb that, like dare, keeps the a in the future and conditional: starò, starei. The present is sto, stai, sta, stiamo, state, stanno. The passato remoto and the imperfect subjunctive use stett- and ste-: stetti, stette, stessi, stesse. The present subjunctive is stia. The tu imperative is stai or sta'. Learn sto, stai, sto + gerund and stavo + gerund first.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using stare for every "to be": "È stanco," "È medico" use essere; stare is for health, staying put and the progressive.
  • Overusing the progressive: Italians often use the simple present where English uses -ing: "Che fai stasera?"
  • Missing the meaning of stare per: "Sto per partire" means "I'm about to leave."
