How to use tener in the future

The future of tener is irregular: the stem changes to tendr-, giving tendré, tendrás, tendrá, tendremos, tendrán. Use it for plans and predictions, and also for guesses about the present: "Tendrá unos cuarenta años" means "He must be about forty." Learners often say "teneré," which does not exist. In conversation, "voy a tener" is just as common for near-future plans.

Examples

  • Tendré el borrador listo para el jueves.

I'll have the draft ready by Thursday.

  • Tendrás que hablar con recursos humanos.

You'll have to talk to HR.

  • No sé cuántos años tiene; tendrá unos cincuenta.

I don't know how old he is; he must be around fifty.
