How to use tener in the imperfect
The imperfect of tener is regular: tenía, tenías, tenía, teníamos, tenían. Use it for past possession, past age and ongoing conditions: "Tenía mucho trabajo" (I had a lot of work). "Tenía que ir" means "I was supposed to go," and does not say whether you went. This is also the tense for describing what something used to have.
