How to use ir in the imperfect

The imperfect of ir is irregular: iba, ibas, iba, íbamos, iban. Use it for past habits ("Iba a la escuela en bicicleta") and for plans that did not happen: "Iba a llamarte" means "I was going to call you." It is also the past form of the near future in storytelling: "Íbamos a salir cuando empezó a llover."

Examples

  • Antes iba a la oficina todos los días.

I used to go to the office every day.

  • Íbamos a salir cuando empezó a llover.

We were about to go out when it started raining.

  • ¿Adónde ibas tan rápido?

Where were you going in such a hurry?
