How ir conjugates

Ir is one of the most irregular verbs in Spanish. The present is voy, vas, va, vamos, van, built on a v- stem. The preterite fui, fuiste, fue is shared with ser. The imperfect iba, ibas, iba is one of only three irregular imperfects. The future and conditional are regular (iré, iría), the present subjunctive is vaya, the gerund is yendo, and the tú command is ve. For "let's go," use vamos (or vámonos for "let's leave").

Common phrases with ir

ir a + infinitive
to be going to (do something)
irse
to leave; to go away
¡Vamos!
Let's go! / Come on!
ir de compras
to go shopping
¿Cómo te va?
How is it going?
ir bien / mal

Mistakes to avoid

  • Forgetting the "a" in the near future: "Voy a comer," not "Voy comer."
  • Confusing ir and irse: "Me voy" means "I'm leaving," while "Voy" alone needs a destination: "Voy a la oficina."
  • Using "vayamos" for "let's go": the normal affirmative form is "vamos."
