How llegar conjugates

Llegar is a regular -ar verb with one spelling change: before e, the g becomes gu to keep the hard "g" sound. That affects the yo preterite (llegué) and the whole present subjunctive (llegue, llegues, lleguemos, lleguen), which also gives the usted and negative commands. Everything else is regular: llego, llegaba, llegaré.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using "en" with places: "Llegué a Lima," not "Llegué en Lima." (Llegar en is used for means of transport: "llegué en tren.")
  • Forgetting the u in the yo preterite and subjunctive: "llegué," "llegue," not "llegé," "llege."
  • Translating "to be late" with ser or estar: "Llegué tarde."
