How querer conjugates

Querer has an e→ie change in the present (quiero, quieres, quiere, quieren) but not in queremos. The preterite is irregular with the stem quis-: quise, quiso, quisieron. The future and conditional double the r: querré, querría. The present subjunctive keeps the stem change: quiera, but queramos. Learn quiero, quise and quisiera first.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using "Te amo" for friends and family: "Te quiero" is the everyday choice; "te amo" is more intense and romantic.
  • Following querer with an indicative clause when the subject changes: "Quiero que vengas," not "Quiero que vienes."
  • Writing "queré" or "querió" in the preterite: the forms are quise and quiso.
