How to use querer in the preterite
The preterite of querer uses the stem quis-: quise, quisiste, quiso, quisimos, quisieron. Its meaning shifts: "quise" means "I tried," and "no quise" means "I refused." "No quiso venir" says that someone decided not to come. For ongoing wishes in the past, use the imperfect quería. "Sin querer" and "no quise" are both common in apologies, so this tense comes up whenever you explain an accident.
