How to use dar in the preterite

The preterite of dar takes -er/-ir style endings: di, diste, dio, dimos, dieron. Since di and dio are one syllable, they carry no accent. Use it for something given or an idiom that happened once: "Me di cuenta" (I realized), "Nos dio risa" (it made us laugh). "Me dio gusto verte" is a warm way to say it was nice to see someone.

Examples

  • Me dio mucho gusto conocerte.

It was really nice to meet you.

  • Le dimos la bienvenida a la nueva gerente.

    We welcomed the new manager.

  • ¿Te diste cuenta de que cambió el horario?

Did you notice the schedule changed?
