How to use poner in the preterite
The preterite of poner uses the stem pus-: puse, pusiste, puso, pusimos, pusieron, with no accents. Use it for placing something at a specific moment and for sudden emotional changes: "Se puso rojo" (he turned red). "Ponerse a" in the preterite means "started to": "Se puso a llover" (it started raining). These meaning shifts make the preterite very common.
