How to use poner in the imperfect

The imperfect of poner is regular: ponía, ponías, ponía, poníamos, ponían. Use it for habits ("Siempre ponía la alarma a las seis") and background descriptions. "Me ponía nervioso" describes a repeated reaction in the past. Compare "se puso nervioso," which describes a single moment. The difference matters a lot in storytelling.

Examples

  • Siempre ponía la alarma a las seis.

I always set the alarm for six.

  • Me ponía muy nerviosa en las entrevistas.

I used to get really nervous in interviews.

  • El profesor ponía mucha tarea los viernes.

The teacher used to give a lot of homework on Fridays.
