How to use haber in the imperfect
The imperfect of haber is había, habías, había, habíamos, habían. As "there was/there were," use only había, describing background: "Había poca gente." As an auxiliary, it forms the pluperfect: "Ya había salido" (I had already left). Saying "habían muchos" is widespread in speech in some regions but is considered incorrect in standard Spanish.
