How to use ser in the preterite

The preterite of ser (fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fueron) is shared with ir, so "fue" can mean "it was" or "he went." Use it to sum up a completed event or period: how a meeting, a trip or a year turned out. It is also the past tense of the passive voice: "El edificio fue construido en 1990." For descriptions of how things used to be, switch to the imperfect.
