How to use ir in the present

The present of ir is voy, vas, va, vamos, van, with no relation to the infinitive. Its most important use is the near future: ir a + infinitive ("Vamos a empezar"). It also describes routines ("Voy al gimnasio los martes") and progress ("¿Cómo va el proyecto?"). "Vamos" doubles as "let's go," and "ya voy" means "I'm coming" when someone calls you.

Examples

  • ¿Cómo va el proyecto?

    How is the project going?

  • Voy al gimnasio antes del trabajo.

I go to the gym before work.

  • Ya me voy, nos vemos mañana.

I'm heading out now, see you tomorrow.
