How andar conjugates

Andar is regular in most tenses (ando, andaba, andaré), but its preterite is irregular, with the stem anduv-: anduve, anduviste, anduvo, anduvimos, anduvieron, with no accents. The imperfect subjunctive follows it: anduviera. A very common learner error is the regular-looking *andé*. Learn anduve first, then the common phrase andar + gerund.

Andar in example sentences

  • Present

Ando muy ocupado con el cierre del trimestre.

I've been really busy with the quarter-end close.

  • Preterite

Anduvimos por el centro hasta encontrar la oficina del cliente.

We walked around downtown until we found the client's office.

  • Imperfect

De joven andaba en bicicleta a todas partes.

When I was young I rode my bike everywhere.

  • Future

¿Por dónde andará el técnico? Dijo que venía a las diez.

I wonder where the technician is. He said he'd come at ten.

  • Present perfect

¿Cómo has andado con el nuevo proyecto?

How have you been getting on with the new project?

  • Present subjunctive

No quiero que andes solo por esa zona de noche.

I don't want you walking around that area alone at night.

  • Conditional

Si no fuera por la rodilla, andaría una hora al día.

If it weren't for my knee, I'd walk an hour a day.

  • Affirmative commands

    Anda, déjame ayudarte con eso.

Come on, let me help you with that.

Common phrases with andar

¿Cómo andas?
How are you doing?
andar + gerund
to go around (doing something); to be (doing) lately
andar en bicicleta / a caballo
to ride a bike / a horse
¡Anda!
Come on! / Wow! (Spain)

Mistakes to avoid

  • Making the preterite regular: anduve, not *andé*.
  • Writing accents on the preterite: anduve and anduvo have none.
  • Using andar for every walk in Latin America, where caminar is more common for the physical act of walking.
