Piacere conjugation Italian verb

Piacere works backwards from English: the thing you like is the subject and the person is an indirect object. "Mi piace il caffè" literally means "coffee is pleasing to me", and plural things need piacciono. It takes essere in compound tenses, and the participle agrees with the thing liked: "Mi è piaciuta la cena."

  • to like (literally: to be pleasing to)
  • irregular
  • Participle: piaciuto
  • Gerund: piacendo
  • Auxiliary: essere

Piacere in the Presente (present): piaccio, piaci, piace, piacciamo, piacete, piacciono.

How piacere conjugates

In practice you will mostly use the third person: piace for one thing or an infinitive, piacciono for several things. The full present doubles the c in some persons: piaccio, piaci, piace, piacciamo, piacete, piacciono, and the subjunctive is piaccia, piacciano. The passato remoto is irregular: piacqui, piacque, piacquero. Learn mi piace, mi piacciono, mi è piaciuto and mi piacerebbe first, since they cover most conversations.
