How leggere conjugates

The present is regular, but watch the sound: leggo and leggono have a hard g (like "leg-go"), while leggi, legge, leggiamo and leggete have a soft g (like "led-jee"). Future and conditional are regular (leggerò, leggerei). The irregular parts are the participle letto and the passato remoto, where io, lui/lei and loro switch to less-: lessi, lesse, lessero, while the other persons stay regular (leggesti, leggemmo, leggeste). Correggere and proteggere follow the same model.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Building a regular participle: "ho leggiuto" is wrong. The participle is letto: "Ho letto il report."
  • Pronouncing leggo and leggono with a soft g. The g is hard before o, so it sounds like "LEG-go", while leggi and legge are soft.
