How nacer conjugates

Nacer belongs to the -cer group like conocer: the yo present adds z (nazco) and so does the whole present subjunctive (nazca, nazcas, nazcamos, nazcan). The rest is regular -er. In practice the preterite is the tense you will use most, because it is how you say when and where someone was born: nací, naciste, nació, nacimos, nacieron. The past participle is nacido (he nacido, ha nacido).

Mistakes to avoid

  • Translating was born word for word: *Fui nacido* or *Estaba nacido* are wrong. Use the preterite: Nací en 1990.
  • Using the imperfect for a birth date: Nació en 1985, not *Nacía en 1985*.
  • Writing *nazo* or *nasco* for the yo present. It is nazco, though you will rarely need it.
