How to use nacer in the imperfect

The imperfect is regular (nacía, nacías, nacía, nacíamos, nacían) but less common, because a birth is usually a single completed event. You will use it for repeated births in the past (every spring, whenever a baby was born) and for background in a story. Do not use it to give someone's birth date; that always takes the preterite. It also appears in descriptions like Nacía el día cuando salimos, The day was dawning when we left.

Examples

  • Cada vez que nacía un nieto, mi abuela tejía una manta.

Every time a grandchild was born, my grandmother knitted a blanket.

  • Nacía el día cuando salimos hacia la obra.

Day was breaking when we left for the job site.

  • En esa época nacían pocos niños en el pueblo.

Back then few children were born in the town.
