How dejar conjugates

Dejar is a regular -ar verb in every tense: dejo, dejé, dejaba, dejaré, deje. Two constructions are key. Dejar + infinitive means "to let": "Déjame ayudarte." Dejar de + infinitive means "to stop": "Dejé de fumar." In negative form, "no dejar de" means "to not fail to," as in "No dejes de llamarme" (be sure to call me).

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using dejar for leaving a place: "Salí de la oficina a las seis" (left the office), not "Dejé la oficina a las seis," which sounds like quitting.
  • Forgetting "de" before the infinitive: "Dejé de fumar," not "Dejé fumar," which means "I let (someone) smoke."
  • Using "permitir" when dejar is more natural in conversation: "¿Me dejas pasar?"
