How llevar conjugates

Llevar is completely regular: llevo, llevé, llevaba, llevaré, lleve. The learning challenge is its range of meanings. With time plus a gerund, the present expresses duration: "Llevo una hora esperando" (I've been waiting for an hour). Llevarse adds ideas of taking away or getting along. Contrast llevar (take, toward a place away from the speaker) with traer (bring, toward the speaker).

Mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing llevar and traer: "¿Me traes un café?" (bring to me) versus "Lleva este café a la sala" (take there).
  • Using "hace" when llevar is more natural for ongoing duration: "Llevo dos horas aquí" is very common.
  • Forgetting the reflexive in "llevarse bien": "Me llevo bien con él," not "Llevo bien con él."
