How chiudere conjugates

The present, imperfect, future and conditional are regular -ere forms: chiudo, chiudevo, chiuderò, chiuderei. The participle is chiuso (ho chiuso, avevamo chiuso). In the passato remoto, io, lui/lei and loro use chius-: chiusi, chiuse, chiusero, while tu, noi and voi stay regular (chiudesti, chiudemmo, chiudeste). Decidere, spendere and many other -dere verbs build their participle and passato remoto the same way with -so and -si.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using a regular participle: "ho chiudato" or "ho chiuduto" is wrong. Say "ho chiuso".
  • Using chiudere alone for locking: "Hai chiuso a chiave?" means "Did you lock it?", while "Hai chiuso?" only asks whether it's shut.
  • Mixing up chiudere (to close) and chiedere (to ask). They differ by one vowel: chiudo la porta, chiedo un favore.
