How spendere conjugates

The present, imperfect, future and conditional are regular -ere forms: spendo, spendevo, spenderò, spenderei. The participle is speso (ho speso, avevamo speso). In the passato remoto, io, lui/lei and loro use spes-: spesi, spese, spesero, while tu, noi and voi stay regular (spendesti, spendemmo, spendeste). Prendere (preso, presi), scendere and decidere follow the same pattern, so the -so participle is worth learning as a group.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using spendere for time: "Ho passato due anni a Roma" sounds natural, "ho speso due anni" does not.
  • Using a regular participle: "ho spenduto" is wrong. Say "ho speso".
  • Confusing spendere with spegnere (to turn off): "Spegni la luce", not "Spendi la luce".
