How to use valer in the affirmative commands

Commands with valer are rare, because worth is not something you can order. The tú form is vale; the usted, nosotros and ustedes forms come from the subjunctive: valga, valgamos, valgan. You will mostly see them in reflexive form, valerse (to manage, to use), as in Válgase de todos los recursos disponibles, or in fixed phrases like ¡Válgame Dios!, an old-fashioned exclamation of surprise.

Examples

  • ¡Válgame Dios, qué susto!

    Good heavens, what a fright!

  • Valga como ejemplo el caso de nuestra oficina en Quito.

Let the case of our office in Quito serve as an example.

  • Valgan estas líneas como agradecimiento a todo el equipo.

Let these lines serve as thanks to the whole team.
