How to use valer in the conditional

The conditional uses the same irregular stem: valdría, valdrías, valdría, valdríamos, valdrían. ¿Valdría la pena...? is a very useful way to ask if something would be worthwhile, perfect for meetings and planning. It also appears in reported speech about future value: Me dijeron que valdría más con el tiempo. Because it sounds tentative, it is a good way to propose an idea in a meeting without pushing too hard.

Examples

  • ¿Valdría la pena abrir una oficina en Lima?

Would it be worth opening an office in Lima?

  • Me dijeron que el coche valdría más si lo arreglaba.
