How hablar conjugates

Hablar follows the regular -ar pattern in every tense, so it is the template for hundreds of other verbs. Remove -ar and add the endings: hablo, hablas, habla, hablamos, hablan; hablé, habló; hablaba; hablaré; hablaría; hable. The written accents carry meaning: hablo (I speak) versus habló (he spoke), and hable (subjunctive) versus hablé (I spoke).

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using "hablar a" for conversations: "Hablé con mi jefe" is the normal form; "hablar a" means addressing someone.
  • Adding an article with languages after hablar: "Hablo francés," not "Hablo el francés."
  • Dropping accents: "Habló" (he spoke) and "hablo" (I speak) are different words.
