How to use hablar in the imperfect
The imperfect of hablar is hablaba, hablabas, hablaba, hablábamos, hablaban. Use it for past habits ("De niña hablaba francés") and for conversations in progress: "Hablaba por teléfono cuando llegó el jefe." "¿De qué hablaban?" asks what people were talking about when you walked in. It also describes how someone used to speak: "Hablaba muy rápido." The only written accent is on hablábamos.
