Ser conjugation Spanish verb

Ser is the "to be" you use for what something is: identity, profession, origin, time, dates, material and lasting traits. It contrasts with estar, which covers location and temporary states, so choosing between the two is one of the first decisions every Spanish learner makes.

  • to be (identity, origin, time, characteristics)
  • irregular
  • Participle: sido
  • Gerund: siendo

Ser in the present: soy, eres, es, somos, sois, son.

How ser conjugates

Ser is irregular in almost every simple tense. The present (soy, eres, es, somos, son) has to be memorized, and the preterite fui, fuiste, fue is identical to the preterite of ir, so context tells you which verb is meant. The imperfect era, eras, era is one of only three irregular imperfects in Spanish. The future and conditional are regular (seré, sería), the present subjunctive is sea, and the tú command is sé, with an accent.
