How to use conocer in the preterite
The preterite of conocer is regular: conocí, conociste, conoció, conocimos, conocieron. Its meaning shifts to "met" for the first time: "Conocí a mi esposa en la universidad." With places, it means "visited for the first time." This contrast with the imperfect (conocía, "knew") is a classic point for learners, and it comes up whenever you tell how you met someone.
