How to use escuchar in the affirmative commands

The commands are regular: escucha (tú), escuche (usted), escuchemos (nosotros), escuchen (ustedes). Escucha and escuche are also used as attention-getters, much like Listen or Look in English: Escucha, ¿tienes un minuto? Pronouns attach with an accent: escúchame. Negative commands use the subjunctive: no le escuches, don't listen to him. The usted form escuche is common on automated phone menus, and the ustedes form escuchen is what a teacher or trainer says to a group. Escuchemos is a polite way to invite others to hear someone out.

Examples

  • Escucha, ¿tienes un minuto para hablar del proyecto?

Listen, do you have a minute to talk about the project?

  • Escuchen con atención las instrucciones de seguridad.

  • Escuchemos primero lo que propone el cliente.

Let's first hear what the client is proposing.
