How to use olvidar in the preterite

The preterite is regular: olvidé, olvidaste, olvidó, olvidamos, olvidaron. It is the main tense for apologizing for a lapse: Se me olvidó llamarte. Using se me olvidó instead of olvidé makes the mistake sound accidental, which is why it is so common in work email. Remember to make it plural when the thing forgotten is plural: se me olvidaron los documentos.

Examples

  • Se me olvidaron los documentos en la oficina.

I left the documents at the office.

  • Olvidé por completo la reunión de las tres.

I completely forgot about the three o'clock meeting.

  • ¿Te olvidaste de llamar al cliente?

Did you forget to call the client?
