How to use partir in the preterite

The preterite is regular: partí, partiste, partió, partimos, partieron. Use it for departures in narratives and news (la expedición partió al amanecer) and for cutting or breaking something: se partió el brazo. Partimos is identical in the present and the preterite. In stories, partió is a more literary way of saying se fue. Note the accents on partí and partió.
