How to use producir in the preterite
The preterite has an irregular stem, produj-, and no written accents: produje, produjiste, produjo, produjimos, produjeron. Note that the ellos form drops the i: produjeron. Use it for completed output (la fábrica produjo diez mil piezas), for effects (produjo quejas) and, with se, to report events: se produjo un incendio. Traducir, conducir and reducir share these endings: traduje, condujo, redujeron.

Se produjo un incendio en la bodega, pero nadie salió herido.
A fire broke out in the warehouse, but no one was hurt.
Ese cambio de horario produjo muchas quejas.
That schedule change caused a lot of complaints.
Los viñedos produjeron menos uva por la sequía.
The vineyards produced fewer grapes because of the drought.
