How decir conjugates

Decir combines several irregularities. The present has the yo form digo and an e→i change: dices, dice, dicen (but decimos). The preterite stem is dij-: dije, dijo, and the third person plural is dijeron, not "dijieron." The future and conditional shorten to dir-: diré, diría. The participle is dicho, the gerund diciendo, and the tú command is di.

¡No me digas!
You don't say! / No way!
decir que sí / no

Mistakes to avoid

  • Writing "dijieron" or "dició": the correct forms are dijeron and dijo.
  • Using "significar" for "to mean" in conversation where "querer decir" is more natural: "¿Qué quiere decir esto?"
  • Forgetting the indirect object with decir: "Le dije a Ana," not "Dije Ana."
