How to use acabar in the preterite

The preterite is regular: acabé, acabaste, acabó, acabamos, acabaron. Use it for things that were finished (acabé el libro) and endings (la reunión acabó tarde). Se acabó means 'it's over' or 'it ran out': se acabó la leche, ¡se acabó! Note that acabé de comer means 'I finished eating', not 'I just ate'; for that, use the present: acabo de comer.

Examples

  • Acabé de pagar el carro el mes pasado.

I finished paying off the car last month.

  • Se acabó la leche; hay que comprar más.

We're out of milk; we need to buy more.
